• “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” heralded the return of Yes, which had broken up in 1981. The new lineup featured original members Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, and Tony Kaye, along with longtime drummer Alan White. The crucial addition was guitarist Trevor Rabin, a South African musician who had started working with Squire and White in a band they were forming called Cinema.
• After adding Kaye to the Cinema lineup, the quartet invited Anderson to be part of the group, and opted to retake the Yes name. At the time, Squire said, “It’s not a reunion. It’s more a reestablishing.”
• Rabin was the principle creative force in the new Yes, and “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” came from the demo tape that had prompted Squire to contact Rabin about joining Cinema.
• Playing to a broader audience than Yes had ever had in the past, “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 and Dance charts, and even made a dent on the R&B chart.
• The 90125 album, named after its catalog number, reached Number Five on the Billboard 200 and has sold well over than three million copies.
• Former Buggles member Trevor Horn, who had replaced Anderson in Yes in 1980 and 1981, produced the album.

FAST FORWARD:

• The song was parodied in an episode of The Simpsons, when Homer Simpson is leaving an auto body shop with a loaner car, singing “Driver of a loaner car.”
• Rabin left Yes in 1995 to pursue a solo career that has included writing music for the film Josie And The Pussycats.
• Yes’s most recent studio album, Magnification, was released in 2001. It features the band playing with a full orchestra.
• Anderson and Howe have also logged time in and out of the band, though both are part of the current Yes lineup, which also includes bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White.

Yes recently announced plans for a 40th anniversary tour. The band’s current lineup includes Anderson, Howe, Squire, White, and Oliver Wakeman, son of Rick Wakeman, on keyboards. The senior Wakeman says he’s not interested in being in the band right now.
