30 years after its release, Nirvana‘s era-defining track, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” has surpassed two billion plays on Spotify, as posted by Chart Data. Blabbermouth reported that the recording, which was featured on the band’s chart-topping Nevermind collection, marks the first of the group’s songs to pass the milestone number.
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” was the lead track and first single from Nevermind, and made its radio debut on August 27th, 1991. To date, Nevermind has sold over 30 million albums, globally.
Nevermind producer Butch Vig told us a while back that the album remains a high point of his career: “Nevermind has been an album that, for me, is one of those things that, well, it changed my life. And it’s. . . I’ll always have it as something that I worked with and was associated with. And I’m really proud of it, because to me that record still sounds as vital as it did when it came out.”
